Book Artisan is one application for the whole job: writing, structuring, styling and generating. This page is the complete list; the in-app guide explains each part in detail, and the home page says who each part is for.
Writing
A Markdown editor built for long documents, with the book rendered beside it.
Live preview, synchronised
The preview renders the real book — the active theme included — and scrolls in sync with the editor. On a small screen it can be shown as a tab beside the editor instead of a side panel.
Editor tools
A formatting toolbar and shortcuts (Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I, Ctrl+K, headings), delimiter auto-pairing, smart lists and blockquotes, Tab indentation, line numbers, editor zoom and a heading outline panel.
Find and replace across the book
Next and previous, case-sensitive, whole-word and regular expressions with group references, replace-all, and replace across every component of the book — or limited to the current selection.
Focus mode and typewriter mode
Hide the tree, the preview and the toolbar to write in a centred column whose width you can drag, and keep the line you are writing on centred vertically.
Spell-check that understands a multilingual book
Several dictionaries, {lang=xx} markers for switching language inside the text, per-project dictionaries, and code blocks excluded from the check.
Cleanup utilities
Join hard-wrapped lines, collapse runs of blank lines and cycle the case of a word — skipping front matter, code and tables, because those are not prose.
Structure
The book is an ordered list of components. Everything about the output — numbering, the table of contents, the EPUB spine — follows that order.
Component types
Front matter, body and back matter, with the types the publishing trade uses: half-title, title page, copyright, dedication, epigraph, foreword, prologue, preface, introduction, parts and chapters, appendix, glossary, notes, bibliography, index, colophon.
Parts
Group chapters into parts; the part pages are generated from the grouping and numbered in the same sequence as the chapters.
Your own names, in the book's language
The names shown in the tree and the dialogs are the ones the book's language defines, not the interface's — a Spanish book shows Capítulo even with the app in English, because that is what the EPUB and the PDF will carry.
Split and merge
A component holding several chapters is flagged; split at the heading under the cursor, or split them all into one component each, in reading order.
Import
Turn a single large Markdown file into separate components, or extract the chapters and images of an existing EPUB.
Cross-references
Internal links resolve in the preview and in every export; in the PDF they show the page number of the destination, and a picker inserts them for you.

EPUB
EPUB 2 and 3 with the images and the CSS embedded, a table of contents, and the Kindle markers (the OPF guide and the EPUB 3 landmarks for the TOC page and the start of reading) that shops ask for.
Page setup and margins, an asymmetric book layout, running headers and footers, lower-case roman and arabic page numbering, real footnotes at the bottom of the page, and optional crop marks with the bleed they need. Three rendering engines: WeasyPrint (built in), PrinceXML and Prince for Books for publisher-grade pagination.
Single-file HTML
The whole book as one self-contained page, with the screen CSS and the images inside the file. Ready to share or publish as-is.
Navigable HTML book
A folder of linked pages, one per component, with the index as a sidebar that keeps the section you are reading marked and in view, and previous/next at the top and bottom of every page. Plain HTML and CSS with a few lines of our own JavaScript — the book navigates without it.
Themes and typography
Themes are CSS. There is no theme editor to learn and no proprietary format to escape from.
Fifteen themes in three families
The base Classic, Modern and Textbook ship free; twelve Pro variants extend them. Each theme has one official name, the same in every language.
CSS you can read
A theme is a stylesheet per component type plus a small settings file. Clone one and edit it, or build one from blank — and override fonts, colours and sizes for a single book without touching the theme.
Drop caps and ornaments
A drop-cap system, per-component decoration and the utility classes for the details that make a page read as a book rather than as a web page.
Fonts that travel with the book
Fourteen typefaces under the Open Font Licence are bundled and embedded in the EPUB and in every PDF engine, each with real italic and bold glyphs — so nothing is synthesized and nothing is missing on the reader's machine.
Publishing
Checks before you generate
Warnings for the things that would silently spoil the file — an image that is not there, a cross-reference that goes nowhere — so the book is not published broken.
Statistics
A live word and character count while you write, and a book-wide report with per-component counts and a printed-page estimate.
Nothing leaves your machine
Book Artisan needs no account and makes no calls home: no telemetry, no online check to open the app, and a licence that is validated offline. It works with the network off.
